Acer has recently skyrocketed in the list of the best selling laptops with their Acer Aspire AS5251. At under $400, the price cannot be beat. But does this inexpensive laptop pack enough punch to be considered among the best?
Of course, what first interests us about this AS5251 Acer laptop is the price. We are accustomed to seeing the top rated netbook come in at prices around $400, but not laptops. Laptops, typically, do not have the compromises and concessions that we find on netbooks. These compromises are found in the form of limited memory, smaller hard drives, less-powerful processors, and much smaller laptop screens.
So, let’s look at what, if any, compromises that Acer had to make to deliver us this AS5251 laptop under $400 (the current asking price is $379 at many locations).
The first thing that I noticed when I received this laptop was the look and feel of the machine. It’s quite similar to the ASUS UL80Vt-A1, which I currently rate as the best price/performance laptop on the market today. The machine is black and comes with a 15.6-inch widescreen laptop monitor that provides solid quality with a built web cam, easily enabling you to video-chat with all of your friends.
The processor on the Acer AS5251 laptop is a 2.20 GHz AMD V Series V120 single-core processor. I am normally an Intel processor devotee but this AMD processor is fast and handles video extremely well with the new Vision technology by AMD. Many laptops that you find today come with a “dual-core” processor, but this processer should meet the needs of nearly every end user.
The hard drive on this machine is 250GB. For our money, this is plenty of hard drive space that will suit all of your needs. Remember, the hard drive space of a machine has nothing to do with the speed. It simply determines how much information that you can store on the machine. If you do word processing, PowerPoint, and all the other Office Apps, this size is sufficient. For the rest of us, who store endless movies and music, we always need to buy another external hard drive for our laptops. Thus, 250GB will satisfy all but the multimedia buffs, who are not satisfied with the storage capacity of any hard drive.
Now, when we look at the memory of this machine, we find the Acer AS5251 laptop with 3GB of DDR3 memory. Is this a compromise? Well, it’s a bit like the single core processor mentioned above. Most of the top selling laptops today come with 4GB of memory, but we could reasonably ask the question: Is this overkill? Again, the standard end-user can get by with 3GB of memory just fine. In fact, I know folks who still get by just fine with 1 or 2GB of memory in their machines and they are frequently running multimedia.
Finally, the clincher that this is a good buy is that it comes equipped with an HDMI port. An HDMI port is the best way to connect a laptop to LCD TV, which is a great way to show a room full of people your picture and movies.
To summarize this Acer Aspire5251 review, I would say that this system sacrifices little for all that it offers. You will have a laptop that performs above-average at a price that is not only affordable but downright inexpensive.

Step 1: Understand What You’re Doing
Dual booting is a nice idea – however, you do need to understand what you’re doing. Meddling around with drive partitions and boot sectors might cause you to lose data. So one thing that I’d advise you to do is to do more research into your dual booting needs first – do you really need to dual boot? Think about that before embarking on this little dual booting adventure.
Step 2: Back up data
The first thing you must do – the FIRST thing – is to back up all your critical documents and files. Also, make sure you back up and try to restore those documents back. I’ve seen many folks who use an imaging program (e.g. Acronis TrueImage) and successfully back up their documents. However, when their system crashes and they try to restore the files – it doesn’t work. So always, always make sure you back up and try restoring the documents before proceeding to the next steps. Another option for back up is to get an external hard disk – this is a simpler solution. If you get a big external hard disk, you can copy all your documents over and they will be quite safe.
Step 3: Download GParted
What do you do next? Well, you download this neat program called GParted. What GParted does is that it shrinks the Windows XP partition. Once it is shrunk, you can burn the Windows XP partition into a DVD. You can then leave room for Vista (at least 10 GB worth of space).
Step 4: Install Vista and run EasyBCD
Once you’ve used GParted and shrunk the Windows XP partition, you should install Windows Vista. Once installed, you should download a software called EasyBCD. This program allows you to change boot up name of the different partitions to your liking.
Step 5: Try it out
The last step here is to try out the dual boot configuration. When the machine boots up, you should be able to choose either Vista or XP as your installation choices. Make sure that you can boot into both operating systems and they work normally.

Acer Aspire One .. but a bigger one
Now you’d think this isn’t really a new netbook … and you’d be right. But what the geniuses at Acer have realized is that they can replicated their success but with a fractionally larger new mini laptops – 10 inch models to be specific.
Several computer manufacturers such as Samsung and HP have only developed 10 inch models and indeed Asus, the netbook pioneer, has announced it is discontinuing it’s other lines to focus entirely on the 10 inch lines.
Acers effort features a restyled body, has changed the mouse buttons to beneath the touchpad, not the sides like the smaller model (relief!), and a slightly larger keyboard – however it doesn’t completely stretch out like the HP netbooks.
The battery problem remains, in that some models are shipping with 3-cell batteries as standard. This will give a limiting and frustrating 2-3 hours of battery life, and we recommend buying a 6 or even 9-cell battery to give satisfactory and more practical battery life – Asus realized this long ago when it launched it’s Asus Eee PC 901 and 1000 models, fitting 6-cell batteries as standard.
LG X110: Curvy and cute
The Korean giant has essentially taken the MSI Wind, rounded off the edges and given it embedded 3G capabilities and called the new product the LG X110. Although the end result is soothing on the eye, it doesn’t make it a better model – you would be better off getting other new mini laptops such as a Samsung NC10, Compaq mini 700 or an Asus Eee PC 1002HE.

The laptop includes a 1.3 mega pixel web camera which is housed on the bezel for video chats. It does seem a shame though that when the computer is in tablet mode, the webcam is hidden within the housing.
Once in tablet mode, the screen can be used as a touch screen. On this model it is a capacitive touch screen meaning responsiveness is good. The glossy screen finish will result in fingerprints however, which may become tiresome once the device is back in netbook mode. Windows 7 is tricky to use with a touch screen as it isn’t really designed for such use. As a result, Dell have included a secondary layer of software called Stage, which provides large, easy to touch icons allowing for control over music, videos, photos, books, internet and games. Unfortunately, the Stage software runs rather slowly, and I feel many will manage without using it.
Another unfortunate criticism that we must level at the Dell Inspiron Duo is with regards to battery life. At approximately three hours, it is well beaten by most of the competition, with some netbooks offering up to nine hours on one charge.
In summary, the Dell Inspiron Duo offers the first glimpse into a possible future for tablet devices. It is fair to say that such a form factor, with some kind of retractable or hidden permanent keyboard, may catch on and prove popular. Unfortunately, prospective users may be forced to wait until the second generation of the device before purchasing to allow for some of the rough edges to be smoothed. It is also important that the user experience improves to become a little more slick and rewarding, rather than slow and frustrating.
Having said that, many will appreciate the novelty of this device, and it does have good features such as the tactile keyboard and of course, the rotating screen. Also, while it may be slightly underpowered for many users, those who are mainly just using the web will still have enough power there to keep them happy.
