Appreciating what the HP Color LaserJet 8550n printer can do will be quite easy after just a few minutes of use. Hewlett-Packard seems to have built this particular laser printer with a medium-sized business in mind. As well, it also looks as if it was intended for a large workgroup within any size business. It prints in both monochrome and color at decent speeds and it also is reasonably priced.
When it comes to print speed in monochrome, a user can expect about 24 pages every 60 seconds and around six pages in that same time span for a color print job. It’s more obvious that Hewlett-Packard intended for this printer to be used as a monochrome printer with the capability to handle the occasional full-color print job. If considering a printer for its color ability, keep that point in mind.
There is no USB connection available with the 8550n, but that hardly is an issue as it does come with a well-functioning Ethernet 10/100 and a workable parallel port, which is kind of old-style but still applicable even in today’s ultra-wired and wireless workgroups. No IT specialist has ever said that he or she has had a problem getting this particular printer going in nothing flat.
As far as the quality of the print job, Hewlett-Packard has ensured that there will be no unpleasant surprises. The 8550n comes standard with 600 dots per inch print resolution capability, which is usually more than enough for most business needs. Any graphics-intensive products should also come out looking acceptable, though business presentation documents could benefit from 1200 dpi.
The HP 8550n can also be ordered with two-sided printing capability; though that’s an option that many workgroups usually don’t take advantage of. Onboard memory is a fine 64 MB, which is upgradable to a full 512 MB in no time at all. Always check with the IT department so that they can assess the print needs of the workgroup before devoting any additional monetary resources upgrading memory that just might not be needed.
Hewlett-Packard has included a 200 MHz processor to manage all of the activities of the printer, which will help it to ensure that any incoming and outgoing tasks are handled in speedy fashion. There’s also 3.2 GB of internal hard disk drive, which is nice to have if needed. The maximum monthly duty cycle is rated by the company at 60,000 pages, so there’s almost nothing to fret over when it comes to maintenance and durability.
The printer is also a monster when it comes to keeping paper stock onboard, as it can handle up to 1100 sheets within all of its various trays. Media stock that it can print on is just as impressive, with glossy paper envelopes, labels, and plain paper presented no problems as far as print tasks. It will require occasional swap out of its four printer cartridges, so keep that in mind.
